Dawn arrival of the “Kara Christa” at Mission Bay in San Diego. It was a stunning way to end our week’s adventure sailing up to the (American) Channel Islands North of Los Angeles with Mary’s son, Jeremy. Although our trip had several seriously dicey moments, we shared a small space cheerfully, worked well together, and did a good job getting through the dangerous situations that came our way. It was one of the best adventures of our lives!
There was one serene overnight watch I will never forget–sailing in the silent darkness with stars blazing overhead and steering to Orion’s Belt. Feeling the push of the ocean in the tiller as the boat rose underneath me, twisting a bit before dropping down again as massive, unseen swells rolled under us in the darkness… Gently pushing against the tiller in time with the swell to keep the boat from skidding, it felt like I was dancing with the ocean for hours. What a privilege.
