Backpacking

Modern backpacking is posh compared to what was possible when I was young.  With ultralight tents and sleeping bags, all-night body warmer packets, lightweight inflatable mattress pads, collapsible backpacking chairs, gravity water filtering systems, a jet boil and some pretty yummy dehydrated meals, a comfy setup for several nights can be done with a pack weight about 35 pounds (including hiking water).  With collapsible trekking poles and modern lightweight hiking boots, even non-athletes can reliably knock out 8-10 miles a day into some seriously beautiful places.

The joy of living in the wild is hard to describe.  Once you have camp set up, you can relax with a cup of coffee, read or do day hikes to see all the magic of the place you’ve made your way into. Bring along a little chocolate and a bit of merlot to share while you watch the sun go down and you may just realize you are living your best life…
